Episode two — The twenty eighth of January

On the Friday afternoon, the Tampa Police Department called out the unit that exists for the benefit of its own officers. Every investigator who had been inside that house was a parent.
This is the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth of January 2011, laid out the way the record lays it out. Where each person in this family was that Thursday — one in Qatar, one in Texas, two of them at school, and one at home with the car keys. Nine miles of Tampa between a house and a soccer practice. The night that passed before anybody knocked on the door, and the phone call from another state that brought them.
Three accounts of that hour exist: an arrest affidavit sworn out inside a day, a handwritten notebook read aloud to twelve jurors three years later, and an interview Julie Schenecker gave inside a prison in 2015. They do not agree with each other. This episode gives you the two that were written down at the time.
